Not by Might

One of the oldest Christian writings we have, apart from the New Testament itself, is the letter of First Clement. Clement of Rome, a bishop in the early church, wrote this pastoral letter as a call to live a single-minded life of Christlikeness. Interestingly, Clement warns his church about several dangerous practices, including arrogance, reliance on strength, and confidence in wealth.

In short, Clement warned Jesus’ followers two thousand years ago about the very issues we still struggle with today. As the author of Ecclesiastes observed, “There is nothing new under the sun.” And what is the antidote to this confidence in human ability?

Humility.

This Advent season at Centennial Covenant, we’re exploring the theme, “Not by Might.” Inspired by Zechariah 4, where the prophet writes,

“Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty.

The ancient church relied on might and power. The modern church still does. We all need to recognize, name, and reject the dangerous, deceptive powers of this world and instead embrace the humble way of the Christ child.

Join CCC for worship this Advent season as we consider how to live, “Not by might, but by God’s Spirit.”
