Hey Centennial,

My family and I like to watch The Amazing Race together. The last episode we watched had one of the classic challenges. Bungee jumping. As often happens, one of the racers who had to complete the challenge was deathly afraid of heights. The cameras caught close ups of his face as he screamed in terror realizing he had to do the exact thing he didn’t want to do. The thing that struck me about bungee jumping is that it is an all or nothing activity. You can’t sort of do it or jump only halfway. Either you jump or you don’t.

When have you had to make an all or nothing decision in your life?

Maybe it was something as exciting as bungee jumping. Maybe something more mundane like buying one car or another. Maybe something more consequential like taking a job in this city or that one. Regardless, it is common for us to come to a point where we must choose decisively between one option or another, this path or that one.

This is the challenge we will hear from Jesus as we finish Matthew 8 this Sunday.

The part of the chapter we will give most of our attention to is often referred to as “The Cost of Discipleship.” When we choose the way of Jesus, we will receive more than any other possible choice, and yet it also comes with a cost.

I’m eager to worship with you this Sunday. I continue to pray that we would all find strength and encouragement, hope and direction in every aspect of our lives by gathering faithfully for worship, study, and prayer.

Grace and peace,
