Christmas.
So many memories, feelings, and anticipations are associated with the word. Songs, sights, and smells fill our homes and nearly every place we go. You could say that Christmas is a time with much adornment.
And yet, we know instinctively that all the adornment is not actually the point. Worse, sometimes (not always, but sometimes) the adornment – the festivities, abundant decorations, piles of gifts – can become a distraction from what Christmas is truly about.
For the past few months here at CCC, we studied through the Old Testament book of Judges. I know, not a very Christmas-y book. Hang with me a second. The main theme is that God’s people forgot God and forgot his Character. They got so confused they started acting in opposition to God but thinking they were pleasing him. As a result, things didn’t go well.
If forgetting God’s character is disastrous, it’s crucial we remind ourselves who God is and what God is like. Do you know God’s character? When you do, it brings the greatest possible joy.
Christmas is the perfect time to remember the God who humbled himself and came to earth. He became one of us. He came to be with us. That’s the character of the God we worship.
We invite you to gather with the Centennial Covenant community this Christmas season. We have a worship gathering every Sunday morning at 10:00am and on Christmas Eve at both 10:00am and 4:00pm for two identical, Christmas Eve candlelight services. Together, we will learn about the character of God as presented in the Christmas story. The hope will be to cut through all the distraction and get to the heart of it all. The theme throughout Advent is,
Unadorned.
We look forward to seeing you any Sunday in December at 10:00am or on Christmas Eve at 10:00am or 4:00pm.
