I just dropped off Nicki Nickerson (our Student Pastor/soon-to-be Children’s Pastor) and my daughter Noelle at DIA. They were departing for Brazil, along with eight other adults and students from CCC. My heart felt full as I listened to the details of their trip and even overwhelmed as I wondered how my middle-aged self could keep up with their packed schedule. We talked about how, at the beginning of their mission trip, they’ll be like a sponge that is going to be squeezed out every day.

As they give and serve, our prayer is that their “sponge” will be replenished by Jesus. God’s light shines through us when we cooperate with him and what he is already doing. That is our prayer and hope for this small-but-mighty team and for all of us.

In this Sunday’s sermon, Rebecka Sutton will help us further explore how we can reflect Jesus’ light, as she addresses the question, we’ve been asking all summer, “Why would anybody come to our church?” Using Ephesians 5:8-14, she will address one of the reasons why people avoid church in general. When people encounter an endless list of “don’ts” at church, they’re often turned off and feel overwhelmed by all the rules.

As Christians, we do have a list of “don’ts” that set us apart for holiness and help us avoid darkness. However, it’s not healthy or productive to become consumed with the “don’ts.” Instead, we’re invited to focus on Jesus, partnering with him to allow his light to shine through us as we do good works in his name. It’s only through Christ’s power and strength that we can be transformed and grow into the people we are meant to be.

Can’t wait to see you Sunday!
