Hey Centennial,

Jim Wilder is a pastor, an author, and a student of neuro-biology. When he thinks about the church, he thinks through a primary lens; character formation. Here is one of his observations that stood out to me.

Character formation requires high trust, supportive relationships in which we can see others living out the character traits we desire to grow in ourselves. We cannot do it simply by force of will or exertion of intellect, we need a community whose love we value and whose example we follow.

Author and Counselor Henry Cloud agrees and adds this further thought.

If you look around and see nothing but status quo, your brain will guide you to match what you see.

Our community not only supports us on the journey of life, they significantly determine where that journey leads in the first place!

So, let me ask you this,

What is your primary community? Who are the people whose lives are most significantly influencing you?

This Sunday we continue our sermon series, Why Would Anybody Come to Our Church? And the focus is on this fundamental but endlessly profound idea.

The church is a community.

I sincerely pray that you are finding people who both support you on your journey and help you travel to better, more Christ-like destinations.

Grace and peace,

Karl Helvig
