Hey Centennial,
How well do you understand your desires?
Authors Henry Cloud and John Townsend say that one of the greatest causes of pain in life—and one of the best predictors of a person who is unable to become healthy and grow—is “holding on to false or flawed desires.” We all have a variety of desires inside us that motivate our thoughts and actions every day. Yet, if we are honest, we readily admit:
Many of our desires motivate unhelpful or even harmful choices.
This Sunday, we will be exploring one of the oldest false desires known to humanity: the desire for greatness. This should not be confused with a desire to contribute with excellence or do your best. Rather, as we will see in Matthew 18, when the disciples ask Jesus, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom?” This desire for greatness is actually a disordered desire for recognition and reward, even at the expense of others.
Where do you have a disordered desire for greatness in your life?
When we know our desires well enough to answer that question, we just might be able to sacrifice that desire to God so He can replace it instead with childlike humility.
Remember, we produce a Study Guide and Sermon Notes every week. These are great ways to engage on Sunday mornings or in community throughout the week. You can download them from the website or find them on the church app.
Grace and peace,
Karl
